Sabrage of sparkling wines, Champagne, Prosecco and other sparkling wines is one of the most interesting and desired attractions for guests on any important occasion. At the same time, it is a measure of evaluation of the quality of the sommelier service and the presentation of sparkling wine in the restaurant. The 10th year of the Slovakian championship in sparkling wine will take place on Saturday, March 9, 2024 in Donovaly in front of the Yeti Bar in Záhradište. The product partner of the competition is ASTORIA WINES, a leader in the production of sparkling wines from the Prosecco area. We invite you to the competition for the best thrift store of the year!

The aim of the competition is:
1. To compare the level of service provision in sabrage by sommeliers that they can offer to their guests or represent their operation or brand at various events
2. To improve the techniques of safe sabrage of sparkling wine
3. To gain wider knowledge about the products and the ASTORIA WINES brand distributed by ELESKO Trading, whose prosecco is among the most popular
4. To attract young, amateur fans of sparkling wine and prosecco, so that they can learn about its history, production and quality and be able to better navigate the offer
5. Experience a great competition day with professionals and the public at the peak of the winter season at Donovaly

We will compete in two chopping techniques:

SEMI-FINALS (for all categories)
Theoretical part: Presentation of knowledge about the ASTORIA brand (history, present, product range, sparkling wine gastronomy, sparkling wine service) in the form of quiz questions by an expert jury.

Practical part: Competitors will demonstrate the classic prosecco sabrage technique with the official sommelier's saber.

FINALS (for female professional and male professional categories)
The second technique is mandatory for the three best semi-finalists from the professional category, who are selected by an expert jury in an anonymous point evaluation. The finalists will use their own original object brought to the chopping block. For this technique, each finalist can use thematic clothing or choreography during the presentation, adapted to the subject (theme) of the competition. In addition, the jury will evaluate the originality of the object used for sabrage, clothing and arrangements of the contestants in the final of the championships during the presentation.

Choosing any subject to chop in the final:
Professional woodcutters use a variety of objects for sabrage, such as tumblers, shakers, wine coolers, saucers, wine glasses, horseshoes, picture frames, golf clubs, even more daring dumpling colanders, pans, spoons, skis, snowboards, women's shoes with metal heel and so on.

Official product partner of the competition:
ASTORIA WINES leading producer of sparkling and still wines in the Prosecco area in Italy. The official product partner will provide GALÍE Prosecco DOC Treviso Extra Dry to the competition

Date and venue of the competition:
The competition will take place on Saturday, March 9, 2024 in Donovaly in front of the Yeti Bar in Záhradište.

The expert jury will be made up of leading experts in the field of sommelier, gastronomy and hoteliers. The chairman of the expert jury will be Ing. Vladimír Hronský, oenologist, professional sommelier and wine columnist.

Competition program on 3/9/2024:

10.00 – 10.30 Hotel Galileo**** Donovaly, registration of competitors, expert committee and invited guests, welcome drink, drawing of order of competitors

10:30 – 11:00 a.m. Transfer to Yeti Bar in Záhradiste. Opening of the competition with a short speech by the organizers and a representative of the product partner, a joint photo of the competitors with the committee in front of the ASTORIA BAR

11.00 – 12.30 Semi-finals of the competition for all categories of competitors

12.45 - 13.00 Announcement of the three best thrift stores in the professional categories who will advance to the finals, joint photo.

13.00 - 13.30 Finals of the chopping championship with any object (professionals)

1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Announcement of the official results of the championships, introduction of Sékač of the Year 2024, ceremonial presentation of diplomas and prizes of the partner and organizers of the competition. End of the official competition program.
